Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential communities and aid for people who require a helping hand with things such as dressing or taking medication. The services provided often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some instances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or continuing care. In Maine, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $62,031 . The state of Maine maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services regulates this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as residents need to be reassessed at least every 6 months thereafter and residents need to be assessed within 30 calendar days of admission. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, other services identified in a service plan, housekeeping services, and chore services. Public assistance is available through Medicaid MaineCare State Plan and the MaineCare 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the maintenance of a medication record for each resident, therapeutic diets are considered treatments and must be ordered in writing, by a duly authorized licensed practitioner, menus must be planned in accordance with residents’ needs and preferences, and at least one nutritious meal a day must be provided. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents must be assessed for their ability to self-administer medications, treatment administration, and residents must be assessed for their need for assistance. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: The licensee must attend any training sessions that the Department determines are necessary to meet licensing standards and the administrator must attend any training sessions mandated by the department.
