Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individual help. Assisted living communities often provide outings for organized activity, help with transportation and appointments, and care supervision. In select cases, communities may provide continuing care, respite, or Alzheimer’s care. In Maine, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $62,031 . Maine has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through Medicaid MaineCare State Plan and the MaineCare 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents must be assessed for their need for assistance, reading labels for residents, and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets are considered treatments and must be approved by a registered dietitian, menus must be planned in accordance with residents’ needs and preferences, at least one nutritious meal a day must be provided, and therapeutic diets are considered treatments and must be ordered in writing, by a duly authorized licensed practitioner. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include The licensee must attend any training sessions that the Department determines are necessary to meet licensing standards and the administrator must attend any training sessions mandated by the department. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as residents need to be assessed within 30 calendar days of admission and residents need to be reassessed at least every 6 months thereafter.
