Assisted living communities offer care, supervision, and social interaction to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The types of service provided often involve help with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or skilled nursing care. In Maine, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $62,031 . The state of Maine maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, housekeeping services, other services identified in a service plan, and service coordination. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents must be assessed for their ability to self-administer medications, observing residents taking their medications, and residents must be assessed for their need for assistance. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least one nutritious meal a day must be provided, therapeutic diets are considered treatments and must be approved by a registered dietitian, a registered dietician must approve menus annually, and menus must be planned in accordance with residents’ needs and preferences. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as residents need to be reassessed at least every 6 months thereafter and residents need to be assessed within 30 calendar days of admission. Public assistance is available through Medicaid MaineCare State Plan and the MaineCare 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program. Staff must receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include The licensee must attend any training sessions that the Department determines are necessary to meet licensing standards and the administrator must attend any training sessions mandated by the department.
