Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers assistance, care, and supervision to healthy seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. Services offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select situations, communities may provide hospice, nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In Maine, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $62,031 . Maine has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least one nutritious meal a day must be provided, a registered dietician must approve menus annually, therapeutic diets are considered treatments and must be approved by a registered dietitian, and menus must be planned in accordance with residents’ needs and preferences. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: The licensee must attend any training sessions that the Department determines are necessary to meet licensing standards and the administrator must attend any training sessions mandated by the department. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as residents need to be reassessed at least every 6 months thereafter and residents need to be assessed within 30 calendar days of admission. Public assistance is available through Medicaid MaineCare State Plan and the MaineCare 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, other services identified in a service plan, chore services, and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents must be assessed for their ability to self-administer medications, residents must be assessed for their need for assistance, and observing residents taking their medications.
