Assisted Living in Naples, Florida

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living communities provide lodging and care to seniors who want some assistance with daily tasks such as taking medicines, preparing meals and other personal care needs. Assisted living communities can be found in all shapes and sizes, so touring them is the most effective way to figure out which one is most beneficial for you or your loved one.

What Services Are Available in Assisted Living?

No one assisted living facility is like another. At a minimum, assisted living provides individually minded seniors living accommodations, meals, assistance with things like bathing and getting dressed as well as a wide range of activities such as wellness programs, social occasions, trips plus much more, all in a safe and secure environment with their friends.

What Are ADLs?

In case you are getting acquainted with assisted living you’ve probably come across the acronym ADLs, which refers to the Activities of Daily Living. ADLs include:

  • Bathing and showering
  • Toileting
  • Dressing
  • Eating (but not meal preparation)
  • Continence care
  • Functional mobility, including getting in and out of a bed or chair

Introduced in the 1950s, ADLs evaluate an individual’s overall health and function. In general, older people who can take care of ADLs by themselves but who are considering a move to senior living could be better candidates for independent living.

For those who have questions about what care type may be the best match for your loved one, contact A Place for Mom. Our Senior Living Advisors can answer any questions you might have about assisted living, independent living, memory care, life plan communities and more.

Assisted Living Vs. Nursing Homes

The phrase “assisted living” was first utilized in the 1980s to explain a new kind of home living for elderly adults that was notably different from more traditional nursing home models. Assisted living is designed for people who want some assistance with some day to day activities but who still would like a specific degree of self-sufficiency and who would like to reside in an apartment-like set up such as a studio or a one-bedroom apartment. Many assisted living communities provide a full calendar of activities and events and offer multiple meal options to serve the different tastes and preferences, including restaurant-style options. Small pets tend to be allowed.

In contrast, the sign of nursing homes is that they offer skilled nursing care. They are designed to meet the requirements of seniors and others who have medical conditions that require 24x7 medical assistance. Food are generally served in a central eating area and residents reside in personal or shared bedrooms. Some nursing homes also present short-term rehabilitative care. Nursing homes today are also known as convalescent care centers, nursing centers, qualified nursing services and long-term care communities. Because they provide more support, nursing homes are more costly than assisted living communities.

Both skilled nursing and assisted living communities may offer memory care, which is specialized support for individuals dealing with cognitive loss. In fact, 40% of the people who live in assisted living in the state of Florida are currently living with some form of dementia, according to the National Center for Assisted Living. In general, people living with the earlier levels of Alzheimer’s or dementia are best served by assisted living facilities while people coping with later stages of dementia or Alzheimer's require the medical care of a nursing facillity.

What Is Assisted Living Like?

While every community can be different, here are some elements that most assisted living facilities share:

  • They offer different degrees of care, sometimes at varied price points.
  • They offer different living choices, from studios to one-bedroom apartments.
  • Many allow residents to bring their own pets, including birds, cats and in some cases smaller dogs.
  • They cater to differing backgrounds, traditions and hobbies. Some facilities, for example, are faith-based, while others are multilingual, with actions and cuisine options to complement. Some are created for retired armed service veterans or college alumni and are situated on or near bases and campuses.
  • They often offer accommodations for couples along with individuals.
  • They vary in size. Some communities have as few as 20 occupants, while others many have more than 200.

With so many options to choose from, finding the right place can feel difficult. Our Senior Living Advisors can help. They reside in the states and cities they serve. When you talk with a Senior Living Advisor, he or she will ask a few questions to better understand what you are looking for, what your budget can be and what particular needs your loved one may have. Best of all their help and advice is free!

When Is It Time to Consider Assisted Living?

If you are asking this question, it’s likely that that it’s time you find out more about senior living. Below are a few other indications that assisted living could be right for both your family member and you.

  • You are worried for your loved one’s basic safety.
  • You are worried they aren’t eating properly.
  • You are concerned about them leaving the home alone.
  • You notice they are spending much less time with friends and family.
  • You receive a phone call or note from a friend who's concerned about them.
  • You discover that your loved one may have trouble remembering people’s names or utilizing a familiar technology like their mobile phone or TV remote control.

If these or other signals are worrying you, take action. Contact A Place for Mom and talk to a Senior Living Advisor today. They can reply to your questions and help you figure out next steps. Best of all, their knowledge is free!

Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings

Florida provides families with exceptional access to its assisted living inspection and ratings records. According to our state-by-state review of state information, Florida’s assisted living regulation and inspection system is one of the most transparent in the nation. To find the records of an assisted living facility in the wider Naples area, go to the FloridaHealthFinder.gov site and query by service type to obtain inspection reports, licensure data, fines and activities assessed against the facility, availability of nursing staff, a crisis plan overview and more.

The state of Florida requires that all new assisted living residents have a medical evaluation within 30 days of move-in to decide on an individualized care plan. The state also requires a minimum number of weekly worker hours based upon the number of people who live in a community to ensure care plans will be accommodated.

10 Things to Look For When Touring an Assisted Living Facility

The way to figure out if an assisted living facility is ideal for your family member is to visit a community -- or even better, four or five of them! Here are a few points to take note of when you tour:

  1. Does the staff connect to the residents?
  2. Is the residence clean, odor free and well taken care of?
  3. Is there a procedure in place for evaluating the requirements of a new resident?
  4. Can residents arrange for transportation if they require it?
  5. Are the personnel professional and respectful?
  6. Are there particular visiting hours or are guests welcome at any time?
  7. Does each resident have a care plan set up?
  8. What happens if a resident’s requirements change?
  9. Is there an emergency plan in place in case of a natural or manmade disaster?
  10. Do the people who live there remind you of your family member?

For more tips about what to search for while touring an assisted living community, download the Assisted Living Residence Checklist.

How to Pay for Senior Living In Naples, FL

How to pay for assisted living is among the most common questions families have as they meet with one of our Senior Living Advisors. Here are a few of the most common funding sources for senior living:

  • Personal income or savings. If a senior will not have enough money saved to cover long-term care, it’s common for households to pool money to make up up the difference.
  • Home equity. Often, seniors sell their home to pay for senior living. Occasionally, a bridge loan may be available to help cover the expense of moving while the house is prepared for sale.
  • Long-term care insurance. This unique kind of insurance is designed to pay for senior care expenditures. Some policies may cover other expenditures that can be accrued through the transition to assisted living, such as hiring a case manager or care advisor.
  • Veterans benefits. Many seniors have served in the armed services and may be eligible for support. Because many benefits move unused, so it’s worth it to check to find out if your loved one or his or her spouse might qualify. For more information, go to va.gov or download our Guidebook to VA Benefits and Long-Term Care for additional information.

Understanding Assisted Living Costs

Assisted living costs differ broadly from community to community, it pays to do your research. Here are some elements that can impact how much you pay:

  • Type of residence
  • Size of apartment (studio, one- or two-bedroom accommodation)
  • Types of services required
  • Geographical location
  • Location of the community
  • Level of luxury amenities

Assisted living facilities often charge a flat rate that addresses many basic services, with additional costs added for particular services. Various other facilities will charge a charge for each service, known as a la carte payment, to ensure that residents pay just for the services they make use of. Ordinarily, the monthly basic rate covers only rent and meals, with care charged separately. Entrance charges and deposits are also often required. Fees and prices vary by facility, therefore it’s necessary to talk to facilities you are visiting about their costs and services.
