Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as personalized care. Assisted living communities usually provide aid with appointments and transit, supervision of care, and support with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, continuing care, or dementia care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and personal care services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, reading the label, and unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents preferences, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, and the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, and communities must document such assessment. Staff members obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include universal precautions, community emergency procedures, community sanitation procedures, and infection control.
