Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide organized social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual support. Assisted living communities usually offer opportunities for social activity, aid with transit and appointments, and help with daily activities. In some instances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, “aging in place”, or hospice. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, personal care services, and assistance with activities of daily living . Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: community emergency procedures, resident rights, reporting incidents, and infection control. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and licensed nursing staff may administer medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits.
