An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers supervision, care, and support to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities commonly offer aid with appointments and transportation, opportunities for leisurely activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or skilled nursing. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division licenses this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , and the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include recognizing signs and symptoms of dementia, housekeeping and sanitation procedures, knowledge of community services and resources, and skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care.
