An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers assistance, supervision, and care to independent persons who do not need skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities usually offer supervision of care, outings for social activity, and assistance with transportation and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division supervises this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, and communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, medication policies and procedures, how to recognize early signs of illness, and recognizing signs and symptoms of dementia. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration.
