Assisted living communities administer healthcare, recreational activities, and oversight to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often involve aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain situations, communities may offer nursing, respite, or hospice. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . Alabama maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards supervises this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination by a physician prior to admission and plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include coordination of medical transportation, medical attention or nursing services, social activities, and general observation and health supervision. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include advance directives, fire and environmental safety, identifying and reporting abuse, neglect and exploitation, and 19 years of age. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must serve daily at least three meals, meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal, and Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets.
