Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care for people who might need support with everyday activities such as self-administering medication or showering. The services provided often include aid with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, “aging in place”, or respite. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of areas. These include: a 20-hour classroom training program, confidentiality, signs and symptoms of dementia, and advance directives. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets, meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, communities must serve daily at least three meals, and Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal.
