About the facility
Cedars of Austin

In 1985, Darrel Farr renovated the Red Cedar Inn to create The Cedars of Austin. The ideal location in the heart of Austin, beautiful view of the Red Cedar River, walking paths around the Mill Pond and wonderful common area design made it an easy choice.

Mr. Farr knows that loving care and a sense of belonging, along with affordability and value, are important factors when choosing a senior community. The close involvement of the Farr family, along with the carefully selected and trained staff, assure the “Cedars Way” of dignifying and enriching the lives of the residents who choose The Cedars of Austin.

Our independent living residents can choose between a one or two bedroom apartment featuring a full kitchen and plenty of storage. Residents may add any or all of our a la carte services, such as meals and housekeeping, or remain totally self-sufficient. If residents bring their car, underground heated parking is also available.

For our assisted living residents, The Cedars of Austin not only provides a beautiful and comfortable place to live, but also the daily care and assistance they require. A Personal Service Plan is created for all of our assisted living residents, assuring that the highest quality...

I was very pleased with the care that my husband received while at the Cedars of Austin. The staff was very kind and met all his needs. Every day he had an activity that he would enjoy, from weekly bus trips, bingo, art projects, musical entertainment, and ice cream socials and gathering times with other residents. The facility is very nice and has a beautiful courtyard, allowing the residence to enjoy the outdoors. The Cedars also offered church services for the residence, inviting ministers to come and conduct services. Cedars of Austin gave my husband 15 months of quality of life that I could not have given him at home. I am very grateful for their care and love that they gave my husband.

The Cedars is in a location close to downtown and clinics. The apartment size and selection was very good. Facility has alot of activities for the residents to enjoy. My parents made their own decision to move in there.

Friendly Community
Friendly staff, receptive to my concerns and feedback. The assisted living yes, the memory care side is very small and depressing . Staff are helpful and nice, but not all experienced with my dad's needs with colostomy and prosthetic leg.

LOVE IT
I am so glad I choose this one after searching in Austin and the WoodburyMaplewwod, MN area. What a great community! This place is close to the downtown area as well as the public library, a new out-of-this-world YMCA, and the Mower County senior center. The Cedars offers transportation to such areas if you don't have a car. There is heated underground parking if you do have a car. There are many activities to choose from at Cedars itself. Austin, also, has an inexpensive great bus service. Rochester and Albert Lea are 30 - 50 minutes away. There is a Walmart, HyVee, and Dollar Store but otherwise, the shopping is somewhat limited.

Memory care for mom
My Brother and I recently toured the Cedars memory care. The tour took us through the entire community area and showed us things we could do when we visit. There was several community room areas, a library, fitness room, hair salon that needed some updating, the dining room was big with a lot of character, I love the thought of being able to park in a heated garage. The memory care itself was cozy and we only seen one apartment open, but I like she can have her own private bathroom and not share one. Our experience overall was really good on the tour and we have decided place our mom at the Cedars. We also talked to a staff that has worked there 15 years that was willing to answer our questions.

It hasn't been that good.
It hasn't been that good. I wanted to move her out the same day we moved her in. They didn't seem to care about much. It doesn't seem like they have a lot of activities there at all, either, they all just kind of sit around. When we went to the tour, they didn't show us a whole lot, just the room. It looks fine, it's clean. I feel like with the memory care they bit off more than they can chew. They seem to be short staffed, and there is one aide there, that seems to be particularly unfriendly.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry that you did not have a good experience initially with the Cedars. I can assure you that we care greatly about each and every one of our residents and apologize if that did not come through to you. Our Activities & Memory Care Director is incredibly passionate about and puts great effort into developing and maintaining a vibrant activities and recreation program and also providing a top quality Memory Care environment for our residents. For her great work in these areas she actually just received a Caregiver of the Year award from LeadingAge of Minnesota. If you have concerns about the activity or Memory Care program she would be more than happy to meet with you to discuss them and do everything she can to address them. All of our staff always welcome feedback and suggestions from all our residents and their family members. We sincerely hope that you have a much more positive experience with the Cedars moving forward."

A Place for Mom has scored Cedars of Austin 8.7 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
