Number of veterans who live in Georgetown

About 39% of Georgetown veterans are 75+

Georgetown’s senior veterans have access to a variety of benefits thanks to their military service. If eligible, some of these VA benefits can help with the cost of an assisted living facility. The first benefit to consider is the VA Pension. Eligibility for the VA Pension can be checked online. Another useful benefit is the Aid and Attendance, which is paid on top of the monthly VA Pension. Veterans who need help with daily activities, have limited eyesight, are in a nursing home, or are mostly bedfast may qualify.

There are veterans services officers on standby to help you figure out which benefits might apply to your situation and help you navigate the application process. Georgetown has these VA-vetted and trained officers at the Williamson County Veterans Services Office. You can also connect with benefits assistance through veterans services organizations (VSOs) like the American Legion.

Medicaid

Seniors with low incomes and limited resources can access Medicaid to cover their medical needs. Medicaid in Texas does not cover the cost of assisted living. However, a home and community based services waiver can cover the cost of health care delivered in an assisted living facility if it is medically necessary.

Medicare

Medicare is the federal health insurance for seniors who are at least 65 years old. It doesn’t cover room and board in an assisted living facility; however, it can pay for medically necessary in-home care for short-term medical needs. What Medicare covers is detailed on this online list.

If you’re qualified, a Medicare Savings Program can pay for some or all of your Medicare premiums or copayments. Extra Help, a low-income subsidy, helps low-income Texas seniors cover the cost of prescription drugs.

To understand more about Medicare and get help enrolling, call the Texas Medicare Helpline. As part of the Texas Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), the Helpline counselors will go over your options and assist you with signing up. This is a free program. The Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Capital Area also offers the state’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program — another good resource for seniors seeking long-term care.

You can sign up for Medicare online or download enrollment forms to take to your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office.

Understand Georgetown laws and regulations for assisted living facilities

Assisted living facilities (ALF) are defined as facilities that provide room and board, personal care, supervision, and medication administration to residents. ALFs must provide a copy of the Residents’ Bill of Rights to each resident and post it in an easy-to-spot area. When a resident moves in, an individualized service plan (ISP) must be completed within two weeks to outline the type of care the resident needs and how they will receive it.

Assisted living facilities in Texas are subject to licensing requirements and regulations. The facilities are regulated under this Texas Administrative Code and this Health and Safety Code.

Two types of licenses

The state Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for licensing and inspecting ALFs. There are two types of licenses granted to ALFs: Type A and Type B. A Type A license is for facilities whose residents don’t generally need help during the night and can follow directions in case of an emergency. A Type B license is for facilities whose residents do need help during the night and would need help to evacuate during an emergency.

Inspections

The Texas Department of Health and Human Services inspects assisted living facilities every two years on average. The inspections ensure compliance in two major areas: health and life safety code. The health aspect ensures staffing levels are appropriate, training has occurred as it should, and staff members have passed criminal background checks. It also looks for anything else that could negatively impact the health of the residents. The life safety code check makes sure the facility itself is taking proper precautions against emergencies like fires.

Texas provides this long-term care provider search portal so you can view inspection reports, complaint information, and more about assisted living facilities.

What to expect from assisted living in Georgetown

Access to great health care, a friendly environment, and beautiful surroundings are all great reasons to love assisted living in Georgetown.

Options for aging in place

A Place for Mom partners with 10 assisted living facilities in the Georgetown area. Just one of those facilities is a standalone assisted living facility. Two are independent living communities that offer assisted living as well. Four assisted living facilities we partner with also provide memory care, and three are a combination of independent living, assisted living, and memory care.

Food and fun

Nearly all of our partner assisted living facilities offer restaurant-style dining, as well as cater to dietary needs. Vegetarian options are available at more than half of our partner facilities, while 70% provide low- or no-sodium options.

With an activity director on staff at all our partner facilities, there will be no shortage of fun to be had. For starters, all our facility partners throw a party for resident birthdays and celebrate holidays. Almost all offer day trips to Georgetown sites, bring in live music and host happy hours, art classes, yoga, trivia games, picnics, and more. If that’s not enough, you can always hang out with friends in the game rooms or movie rooms that are available at 80% of our partner facilities.

Plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors

Some assisted living facilities feature private patios and balconies where you can try to catch a glimpse of Lake Georgetown. Many assisted living facilities have outdoor walking paths and common areas to sit and enjoy company or the view. There are even some facilities with outdoor swimming pools.

Plenty of personal care

At our partner assisted living facilities, you’ll get all the personal assistance you need, from help with daily activities to chores like housekeeping and laundry being taken care of. All of our partner facilities have full medication management available, as well as visiting physical, occupational, and speech therapists and podiatrists. While nearly all our partners have visiting nurses, more than half offer nursing right on-site and have a doctor on call.

Multilingual options

The close proximity of Texas to the Southern border means a lot of opportunities to find Spanish-speaking options in your assisted living facility if you need them. In fact, 70% of the facilities we partner with have Spanish-speaking staff, and another 10% have staff that speak Filipino.

Transportation for seniors in Georgetown

Getting around Georgetown won’t be a chore for residents of our partner assisted living facilities since they all provide free transportation. There are additional options in town if you need them.

You can get around Central Texas by hopping on the CARTS bus service. CARTS operates on fixed routes and even offers half-price fares to seniors who are 65+ and those with disabilities. That makes a monthly pass only $44. You can also pay per ride, which would just be a dollar each way.

If you need a paratransit service, Georgetown has GoGeo. However, availability is limited to weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can apply for GoGeo by filling out this paper application; or if you’re 65, you get to skip the application process and simply sign up by calling 512-478-RIDE.

A volunteer program called Faith in Action’s Driving Seniors not only offers door-to-door service to seniors, but it also has what it calls door-through-door service. That means the volunteer driver will not only pick you up and take you where you want to go, but he or she will also accompany you. You do have to call at least three days in advance to ask for a ride (five days if you want to go out of town). Wheelchairs cannot be accommodated if a senior isn’t able to transfer themselves into the vehicle since volunteers are using their personal vehicles for this service.

If you’re thinking about getting around on foot at all, that’s not a great idea unless you are in the downtown area or the Old Town District. Georgetown doesn’t rank highly for being walker and biker friendly, scoring only 23 and 35, respectively, on a scale of 100, according to Walk Score, which grades the walkability of cities across the nation.[04]

Senior activities in Georgetown

Seniors and their loved ones will have no trouble finding plenty to keep them busy in Georgetown. From local shopping and festivals to performing arts and gorgeous parks, it doesn’t matter what your interests are, Georgetown has you covered.

Texas-style festivities

Georgetown is known for its cultural events, like the annual Red Poppy Festival, which celebrates the city’s status as the “Red Poppy Capital of Texas.” This 3-day celebration features a parade, car show, artisan market, food vendors, and plenty of live music.

The annual Blazin’ Beer Crawl is a go-at-your-own-pace event featuring local craft beer and spicy snacks. The annual Christmas Stroll is a festive celebration that brings in food trucks and live music, features a Christmas parade, and makes sure local shops stay open late so you can get your holiday shopping done.

The town square is the heart of Georgetown

It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so it’s no wonder that Georgetown bills itself as having the most beautiful town square in all of Texas. With its Victorian architecture and local flavor, you’d be hard-pressed not to find something you love.

If you love classic cars, don’t miss Pistons on the Square every third Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Muscle cars, antique cars, and motorcycles will line up for viewing. The second Saturday of each month is reserved for Market Days on the Square, which features booths full of arts and crafts, fun food, and live music.

When there’s not a special event, the square is still really special! It’s packed with locally owned shops, restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, and more. While you’re there, take the free tour of the gorgeous neoclassical Williamson County courthouse that was fully restored in 2007.

Accessible art that includes everyone

The Georgetown Palace Theatre opened in 1925 to show silent films and was renovated in 1936 in the Art Deco style. Today, it’s been restored to its full glory and is home to concerts, plays, and more. The theater goes to great lengths to make sure everyone can fully participate and enjoy the show!

Each play features an American Sign Language night for the hearing impaired, as well as an audio description for people with vision impairments. This is a verbal commentary that explains what’s happening on stage when there is no dialogue (without disrupting the show). An inductive hearing loop can also deliver what’s being said directly into hearing aids that have T-Coils. Free adaptive performances also take place that are shortened and sensory-friendly.

Soak up the natural beauty

Start out by strolling the banks of the San Gabriel River and enjoying the shade of the centuries-old oak trees at San Gabriel Park. If you want to plan out a stroll, use this interactive parks and trails map to decide where to go. Lake Georgetown is another popular stop. You can just take in the waterfront views or cast a line for some bass, flathead, and channel cat.

Foodies rejoice

If you want to go out for a meal, snack, or just a sweet treat, you are in luck because Georgetown is packed with stellar options. Stop by Galaxy Bakery, where the giant cupcakes are out of this world! Indulge in a wild concoction at The Yard Milkshake Bar or swirl a glass at the award-winning Georgetown Winery. Enjoy one of the area’s many craft breweries, like the Barking Armadillo or Rentsch Brewery.

If you’re looking for a delicious meal, check out the Monument Cafe. This 1940s-style diner featuring farm-to-table food was featured on Food Network when Guy Fieri and Matthew McConaughey stopped by for an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
