This is a lovely facility with many wonderful staff and activities. However, if your loved one needs enhanced physical support, take an extra look at the number, consistency and quality of the nurse's aides. As my mother declined physically, some of the aides expressed frustration with her and the inconsistent Staffing meant that aides were not familiar with her and her needs. A fall led to hospitalization and then to Skilled Nursing Care.

Just not a good fit

This is a nice community and my mom was here for about 2 months. The staff are friendly and caring and kept me well informed about my mom. The problem was that it is a larger community and my mom was not adjusting well to that and I felt that with her memory care she would do better in a smaller home-like environment. I would suggest taking a tour here as it is a very nice community.

The staff is so friendly and caring. They helped me through this difficult time. My mother did not want to leave her home with me. She is slowly adjusting. The staff is working with her to engage in the activities that they offer, which is a lot, even activities for residents that can't sleep through the night. They have activities for them. Very accommodating.

Impressed by my tour.

During the tour, I was impressed with what I saw, the longevity of their employees, and that many employees had family members living there. Mom is due to move in in a few days, and I am hopeful that her stay will be an enjoyable one.

[name removed] and the office staff were very welcoming! [name removed] took the time to gather information on Mom and what we were looking for as a family for Mom. It is nice that residents get to "age in place" at the same location and the increased care is provided. The one floor building plan is very easy to navigate and brings residents to the "central area' for activities and dining. The actual resident rooms are one big room; which would not meet our Mom's needs.

My Review of Devon House

The staff were friendly to me. My loved one was sent to the hospital due to a fall. They gave us clothes that weren't my loved one's after my loved one's passing. There were times that my loved one didn't have clothes of her own when visiting the doctor. There were missing items and we have never gotten those back still.

A smaller community setting, not without issues

Devon House is a relatively small, family-run assisted living facility, and its pros and cons are probably typical of such an operation. Pros: a smaller community, more personal interactions between residents and staff, less corporate structure and fewer rigid rules, reasonable pricing that does not vary with residents' needs, good "home-cooked" food served in a community setting. Cons: steady turnover of staff (rapid turnover rate of head nurse position particularly concerning), little to no security to keep outsiders from coming into and leaving the facility (fortunately it is located in a nice neighborhood), no formal memory care program (the sole activities facilitator focuses her efforts on those who are most capable of participating, leaving a sizable sub-population of residents in their rooms), varying competency of aides (some of whom were wonderful), which can result in inconsistency of care, particularly for those residents who are no longer capable of self-toileting/bathing, absolutely constant call bells and buzzers sounding. In sum, Devon House is a good landing spot for an individual or couple who need some assistance, especially with meals, and will benefit socially from living within a small community; in my opinion it may not be a good match for those with greater needs, particularly those with advancing dementia.

Improvements Needed

It has been an adjustment process for my father with his move to this community. He seems to be doing better now. Overall there is some room for improvement in this community. They are under staffed, and to hire more staff members. For the staff that is there, some are better than others. Overall this community needs to make some improvements.

Nice but could be better

I do have to say that the staff was very nice and some truly stood out as going above and beyond . I was not pleased with the size of the memory care unit. The other areas are large and comfortable but the common/living area in memory care is small and in fact, there is not enough seating for the residents. Often, the staff has to bring in kitchen chairs and many residents cannot see the television due to lack of space. There is an atrium area that no one seems to use and could be better utilized for this space issue. Also, there are HUGE potholes in the entrance road. While I understand our winters cause this, it seems some temporary solution could be made. As the cost is $5000 per month, one would think it should be a little more upscale. In comparing other assisted living facilities, Orchard Heights, in my opinion, does have more assistance for those that need more care.

Needs improvement from top down

This has been a very big change in our lives especially my mom. Unfortunately she thinks all these places are the same. The staff are not held accountable to do their jobs properly or well. They are often rude and seem out out to help mom with her needs. They throw her clothes on the floor rather than putting them in the laundry bag provided. The food is advertised as delish and fresh- it's far from. It's often chewy, covered in gravy- hardly fresh. The upper management is mediocre- which may explain the aids attitudes. With the exception of a select few- the staff are not that nice and appear lazy at work. This place is very very expensive and it blows my mind at the quality of care. We are considering moving

Much better choices in the lehigh valley

I chose this community against my better judgement because they were willing to take her immediately from an out of state rehab facility.I realized the first week my mom's care was temporarily above what they expected, but the check I wrote them over rode any trepidations they had. Call bell answer times averaged 1:15. A few absolutely wonderful CNA'S, but shorthanded every shift. Why are the people giving the bulk of care earning $15 an hour? My mom is now at another facility and thriving.

Never put your parent here

Take note of all the residents sleeping in the hallways, sleeping in the front living room area. This place likes to medicate their residents. They put my Mom on a medication without getting my permission. She had her ring her wallet and several items of clothing disappear the first week. She fell and had a sub dermal hematoma due to the med change. I immediately moved her out of this facility! The new one that she has been in the last two years has been good. My advice would be to never put your parent here!

Older facility in desperate need of renovation. The elevator was out for 4 days during February 2015 residents had to be transported by wheel chair to dining room for all three meals. No camera surveillance to support security program in the buildings. Very under staffed to care for large number of residents that have mobility issues. Building has several challenges with mobility issues. Meals are ok - not much variety alot of processed food.
