Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

About a half-hour drive west out of downtown Houston lies its charming suburb Katy, once a small rural community around a railroad stop and now a welcoming, family-friendly escape from the big city. In the 1890s, when plans for a town were first laid out, developers looked to the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railway for a name — Texans often used the letters “KT” to refer to the railroad which anchored the town, so “Katy” was officially founded and attracted rice farmers steadily over the following decades. The construction of Interstate 10 in the 1960s allowed the town to flourish into the thriving suburban city it is today.

Katy’s ever-growing number of upscale planned communities has sparked new retail and entertainment developments throughout the city’s history, so residents of all ages have plenty to choose from in Katy without having to venture into H-Town to stay active. Shoppers can spend an entire day at Katy Mills, a gigantic outlet mall with indoor attractions like a carousel and train. Katy’s museums include Art Museum TX for regional contemporary art, the Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum for local agricultural history and artifacts, and the Katy Veterans Memorial Museum for exhibits on U.S. military conflicts. Visitors can travel back in time to the town’s settlement at Katy Heritage Park & Historical Homes, as well as the MKT Railroad Depot & Park, both showcasing well-preserved and restored buildings from Katy’s earliest years. For outdoor recreation, check out Mason Creek South Hike & Bike Trail, Mary Jo Peckham Park, and Katy Boardwalk.

Transportation

For access to downtown Houston and the rest of the metropolitan area, the city’s METRO service operates the Grand Parkway Park & Ride bus stop, about three miles east of Katy, as well as Kingsland Park & Ride bus stop, which is about five miles east of Katy. Some private home care providers also offer non-emergency transportation for seniors in the Katy area.

Disclosure: A Place for Mom refers to "nursing home" here generally as an umbrella term to include assisted living facilities. It is not used to indicate that the facility meets official state requirements for level of care of a skilled nursing facility, as defined in that particular jurisdiction.
