Nursing Homes

A nursing home is an establishment that provides housing to two or more seniors who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. A nursing home facility provides its inhabitants with 24-hour care by on-site nurses. These caregivers offer care for those who are unable to take care of their own needs due to their aging.

Nursing homes are a convenient and comfortable living option for persons 65 years and above, however nursing homes will usually allow individuals 55 and above which is unusual for other senior care types. Many residents of nursing homes are persons with behavioral issues, which can consist of a tendency to wander, verbal outbursts, or resisting assistance. Many occupants tend to be bachelors or widows who have less social support, and almost 50% of nursing home residents are over the age of 85. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include flowers and plants, personal clothing, and cosmetic and grooming items. A significant number of nursing home inhabitants are seniors who have a physical or mental disability, experience difficulty with vision and hearing, require assistance with daily tasks such as walking, or have incontinence issues. Nursing homes are required to provide medically-related social services, routine personal hygiene items, specialized rehabilitative services (treatment for mental illness or intellectual disability), and pharmaceutical services to residents.
