Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Brooklyn’s official motto is “Eendraght Maeckt Maght,” which, translated from the Dutch, means “Unity Makes Strength.” Located on the East River shore of Long Island, Brooklyn and its uniquely diverse communities have something for everyone, including museums, art galleries, parks, and some of the most delectable cuisine in the world.

For many years, Brooklyn has been a haven for artists and musicians, and its reputation as a cultural hub dates back even further. The world-famous Brooklyn Museum, located in the heart of the borough, houses the second largest public art collection in the United States. Brooklyn is also home to prestigious music venues like the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) — encompassing an opera house and the BAM Rose Cinemas — and Bargemusic, a classical music venue converted from an old coffee barge.

Brooklyn boasts its fair share of picturesque parks. Prospect Park, perhaps Brooklyn’s most popular park, contains Prospect Lake as well as numerous cafes, gardens, and walking trails. Another popular destination is the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, which encompasses 52 acres, houses over 14,000 varieties of plants, and includes a Bonsai garden, an aquatic garden, and an art gallery.

A trip in Brooklyn would not be complete without the historic Brooklyn Bridge. Connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn, the Gothic Revival marvel offers gorgeous views of the Manhattan skyline across the East River. Visitors often cross the bridge by foot, explore Brooklyn Bridge Park, and then top off the day with an authentic New York-style pizza tour.

Transportation

Like the rest of New York City, Brooklyn has easy access to many means of public transportation. Subway lines and bus routes run throughout Brooklyn, and the borough itself connects easily to Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Seniors are eligible for reduced fares, (half the price of a standard ticket) through the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).
