you must look beyond the beautiful presentation
At Charter, you must look beyond the beautiful presentation. Cleaning staff left a lot to be desired. On many occasions, I changed my brother's linen. They will nickel and dime you to death once you move in. I must say that the Activity Director is outstanding.

Our Experience
It has been a pretty good experience overall. My family member seems to be happy there. The activities are excellent. I just think the price is outlandish - there's a considerable extra charge for someone who can't hear yet is very active and able otherwise. I feel we got nickeled and dimed once we got in. I would advise you to keep your eyes wide open regarding that. They told us one thing up front, but once we moved in, it was different. You have to stay on top of things. You can't just put your loved one in there and expect them to do everything. When I have concerns, they tell me they'll act on it ASAP. He has adjusted well overall, which I credit a lot to the activities and the activities director - she's superb and a huge credit to Charter. His involvement in the activities helps keep his spirits up.

It took us a while to get adjusted at this community. It was a big change in moving. Overall the people are friendly the staff you can get a long with and talk to therm. There is also an open policy with the director. It could be better but what I'm hearing from other people this community still rates among the better ones.

At the moment would not recommend this community
The staff was very good at this community, the rooms were pleasant and well kept. Some activities they had were bingo, board games and entertainment groups come in to sing, and would have a happy hour, either once a week or once a month. They had different meal shifts for the residents to eat at, but if you were on the third and last shift there wouldn't be any specialty food left.

I Like Brookdale. for my mom, but...
Brookdale has been good for my mom in many ways; however, there is a severe lack of staff for the residents. Residents sometimes have to wait 30 minutes or more for someone to answer a call from the pendant. My mom has had to wait for that time and longer. If my mom had been having a serious medical condition, she may not have survived the wait. They need more staff as far as caregivers are concerned. The staff that they have is great!!! Also, they often have problems with the elevator in the main lobby. It is too often unusable.

Mom and Brookdale
Brookdale is OK. My Mother is safe; the Caregivers are nice and in-tuned to changes in her demeanor. I love washing my Mother's clothing, and the task is never left for me. I do have to vacuum her room, request toilet paper and clean her bathroom at times. Upset that her trash can was discarded...environment is small and it is preferred versus the atmosphere at sunrise; single rooms keep my Mom out of trouble and I love that!

Horrible care
Awful place! My parents lived there for several years and hated it. Radically understaffed. People pay thousands of dollars a month to live there so they can get help with activities of daily living. Before you move in, they tell you the average response time between pressing your pendant and a caregiver arriving is 10 or 15 minutes. When that actually happens, it's a minor miracle. It can easily take 30-60 minutes -- if anyone comes at all. Disgraceful.

Very poor care
My parents moved to Brookdale when my father, who had Parkinson's disease, started needing more help than my mother could provide by herself. Unfortunately, the facility was woefully understaffed. It wasn't unusual for my father to have to wait 45-60 minutes, or more, after he pressed his pendant for help. Complaining to the executive director never made any difference. Many residents were in wheelchairs and needed assistance from staff to get to and from the dining room. That was almost always a frustrating experience because of how long they would wait. Often there were four caregivers on duty for about 80 residents, many of whom needed assistance showering, dressing, toileting and getting to and from the dining room. You do the math! And for this, my parents paid about $6,500 a month. The dining room was also understaffed. Getting a server's attention just to put in an order could be stressful, and the dining room was small enough that they needed two seatings to accommodate everyone. It was often a challenge just to get served and eat before getting kicked out. In short, the place was awful!

Timing Was Right
We had looked at a number of different communities in the area and most of them were fine. Some of them were a little too large in what we were looking for but generally, most of them were out of our budget range. When we had come across this community the timing seemed to be on our side they had a shared suite with an opening and the price fit within my moms budget. It's been a bit of an adjustment for her moving here but the staff has been good in helping her. They have been very kind and friendly. There are lots of things to do here and mom is having a good time doing activities. She is enjoying the food well balanced.

A Place for Mom has scored Charter Senior Living at Woodholme Crossing 8.4 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
