Disappointments
We admitted our family member with a diagnosis of dementia and tests from a neuropsychologist. Later, we were informed the dementia was a problem, the deceptive sales pitch promised alot. Constantly understaffed and price gouging are common. The best part was the key fab. Also, they charge a daily rate but do substantially less activities/services on the weekends. The completely subjective process of evaluating your monthly services is unethical because they are short staffed and can't deliver the care that they upcharge. As high as $60-$90 daily. Their greedy business approach is suspicious of how the employees are rewarded financially. Room cleaning and laundry services are inconsistent and the excuses are plenty. Employees reviewed my loved ones personal information in a location that was overheard by many of the other residents and a second time over the walkie-talkie. No regrets about moving from Bickford of VB. It was profoundly beneficial to our entire family.

Would Not Recommend for anyone with memory loss or dementia
They were supposed to provide care to my loved one and it didn't happen. Her bed would be wet, she smelled like urine. They would wake her up and get her up and tell her to go to the dining room. She would go to meals with no hearing aid in. It was a constant battle. We had to go to the head nurse regarding our concerns. We had to leave notes all over to guide her teeth where brushed, etc. Those were totally ignored. We had found our loved one soiled and sick. They left a soda and soup beside her bedside. It was a week before the feces was cleaned up off her carpet from her room. We had to have numerous meetings with staff and come see everyday what was being done and not being done. The director of nursing didn't address all these issues and her ADL's not being done. She did not want to hold any staff accountable for anything they did or didn't do. We had to show the Director her bed had urine in it, her bridge was in her bathroom, hearing aides left in her room and it was close to lunch time. No accountability.. We told them she needed a UA, they didn't do it and she had a bad UTI. They made excuses why they couldn't see through her getting a urine sample. Blaming my loved one, who has dementia. She was taken to the hospital and it was so bad it required hospital admittance. She declined rapidly after this. We had to remove her from Bickford and place her somewhere else.

Great fit for my dad
We chose Bickford of Virginia at the time because of the location and the overall feel of when you walk into the facility. It was very homey and inviting rather than some other places that we saw that were more institutional. My fathers room size is pretty good, he has a smaller room but it is adequate for his needs. The best part about the community so far has been the friendliness of the staff members. They are always very responsive and helpful and you can tell they genuinely care about their residents.

They have been able to manage a couple of crises about the health of my loved one. This was handled extremely well. Not to mention they have been able to keep my loved one safe during COVID.

New Community, Still Working the Kinks Out
I had a great experience with Bickford. The weekends staff was a skeleton, and I believe that they could use more staff on the weekends.
I kept telling the community that my loved one needed to be reassessed for his condition, this was my only complaint. If a family member says a loved one needs to be reassessed, they should be reassessed prior to moving in.
I feel they were attentive for my loved one.
The staff and community were friendly. It was a beautiful community, and I would recommend it.

Asked Us to Leave After Three Months
My husband entered the community's memory section, when it was just opened. In the next couple of months, the memory care section filled. They may have had a waiting list, my husband was asked to leave after only 10 weeks. The community stated they couldn't accommodate his level of need. There was no change in the ten weeks, accept the floor was full.
It was hard to move to a different place after ten weeks, and get used to the new environment all over again.
The activities on the assisted living side were good, and the activities on the memory side needed a person who better understood the level of resident's level of ability to participate.

good but bored
Nice facility, qualified staff, good food but my loved one is bored in the memory care section. I don't think there are activities in memory care, none that I know of yet, other than TV all day or sleeping. Maybe it's because the facility isn't full yet and its still a new facility but I haven’t seen event calendar for memory care but they ought to be doing something to break up their day besides meals
