Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, care, and support to medically stable seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently offer aid with the activities of daily life, outings for social activity, and assistance with appointments and transit. In some instances, communities may offer nursing care, hospice, or dementia care. Wisconsin has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) governs this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include information and referral, health monitoring, activity programming for persons with dementia, and leisure time activities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Staff must receive training in a number of subjects. These areas include needs assessment of prospective residents, community policies and procedures, challenging behaviors, and first-aid. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
