Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individual support. Services provided often include help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some instances, communities may provide hospice, nursing, or “aging in place”. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , practitioner, and a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include First-aid and CPR, specialty training, continuing education, and HIV/AIDS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration provided through nurse delegation, medication administration, and resident self-administration of medication. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include basic personal care services, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, assistance with ADLs, and administration of health care treatments. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as level of personal care needs, activities and service preferences, preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, and significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care.
