Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide social opportunities, supervision, and healthcare to persons who are on average 65 years of age or older. Services provided often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, dementia care, or respite. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include communities choose to provide certain health support services, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, assistance with ADLs, and basic personal care services. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and practitioner. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES). Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as level of personal care needs, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , mental illness, and activities and service preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, and resident self-administration of medication. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include orientation (2 hours), specialty training, safety training (3 hours), and nurse delegation and core diabetes.
