Assisted living communities offer care, supervision, and social opportunities to persons who are about 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with transit and appointments, opportunities for leisurely activity, and aid with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or nursing care. Virginia has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services supervises this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include bedtime and between meal snacks must be available, three nutritious meals must be provided each day, and Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include The community must have a medication management plan that is reviewed and approved by the Department., Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications. Staff are required to receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include Specific duties and requirements of their positions, procedures for detecting suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, hand-washing techniques, standard precautions, and infection risk reduction behavior, and confidential treatment of personal information. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include Monitoring the community s medication management plan and infection control plans, Provide protection, guidance, and supervision, 24-hour supervision, and periodic health care and oversight through a licensed health care professionall–. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant and Initial comprehensive assessment .
