Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individual support. Assisted living communities usually offer outings for organized activity, support with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. In certain situations, communities may offer skilled nursing, hospice, or respite. The state of Tennessee has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities governs this community type. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These include: fire safety disaster preparedness, nutrition, food service, and financial management. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, personal services such as protective care, the ability and readiness to intervene if crises arise, and laundry services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with health services, physical assessment, arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, and recreational and social activities. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening dosage packaging, residents may self-administer medication, and assistance with reading labels. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, and must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program.
