Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers supervision, assistance, and support to independent persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The types of service offered often involve help with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, “aging in place”, or respite. The state of Tennessee has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities governs this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as physical assessment, assistance with health services, recreational and social activities, and arrangements for visits by or to health care providers. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include emergency procedures, applicable state rules and regulations, health care management, and food service. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the ability and readiness to intervene if crises arise, medication administration, dietary services, and assistance with activities of daily living. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, and No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening dosage packaging, assistance with reading labels, and residents may self-administer medication.
