Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers support, assistance, and supervision to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and opportunities for organized activity. In some cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, continuing care, or nursing. Tennessee has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. Staff are required to receive training in a number of subjects. These include: emergency procedures, healthy lifestyles, fire safety disaster preparedness, and food service. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include part-time intermittent nursing care, personal services such as protective care, the ability and readiness to intervene if crises arise, and laundry services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with health services, recreational and social activities, arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, and physical assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, and No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident while taking medication, assistance with reading labels, and opening dosage packaging.
