Assisted living communities provide healthcare, oversight, and social opportunities to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often provide support with the activities of daily life, help with appointments and transit, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or respite. The state of Oregon has specific standards associated with this kind of community. Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Licensing and Regulatory Oversight regulates this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid Aged and Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include maximize physical functioning, 24-hour emergency care service, assist psychosocial wellbeing, and health services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all food must be in accordance with the Department of Agriculture food pyramid and must provide three meals a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. Staff must receive training in a variety of fields. These include: infection control, abuse and reporting requirements, fire safety, and the values of community-based care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental health evaluation, ADLs test, physical health exam, and risk indicator assessment.
