An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers aid, support, and supervision to healthy seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities commonly offer chances for social activity, supervision of care, and help with transportation and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing care, respite, or Alzheimer’s care. Ohio has specific regulations related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical diagnoses, cognitive status review, health history, and psychical history. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. Staff must receive education in a number of fields. These include: job responsibilities, community procedures, securing emergency assistance, and residents rights. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, verifying labels, and assistance opening and taking medication.
