An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, supervision, and assistance to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The types of service offered often include support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In certain situations, communities may provide dementia care, nursing care, or hospice. The state of Ohio maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, verifying labels, and assistance opening and taking medication. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, activities, intermittent nursing services, and supervision. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These include: job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, community procedures, and residents rights. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as health history, cognitive status review, medical diagnoses, and psychical history.
