Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as personalized support. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with the activities of daily life, outings for organized activity, and care supervision. In some cases, communities may provide nursing care, hospice, or respite. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include limited nursing care, assist with personal care, pharmaceutical services, and recreational activities. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a health care assessment, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a level of care assessment, and routines and preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and administer medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include assisted living concepts, caring for residents with impairment, infection control/prevention, and emergency plans and procedures. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports.
