An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, care, and support to healthy individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with daily activities, care supervision, and help with appointments and transportation. In certain situations, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or dementia care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services governs this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, nursing needs, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and routines and preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, monitor dosage, and administer medication. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, assist with personal care, recreational activities, and social work services. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include residents rights, Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, infection control/prevention, and pain management. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents.
