Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individual help. The types of service offered often include support with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In some cases, communities may offer respite, nursing, or hospice. Department of Health and Senior Services regulates this community type. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include infection control/prevention, residents rights, caring for residents with impairment, and emergency plans and procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and provide three meals a day. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include social work services, pharmaceutical services, dietary services, and transportation. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, routines and preferences, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and a health care assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and monitor dosage.
