An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers assistance, supervision, and support to healthy seniors who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities often provide opportunities for social activity, support with daily activities, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing care, continuing care, or dementia care. In New Hampshire, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $72,000 . New Hampshire has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include social/recreational activities, crisis intervention, personal care, and medication services. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These include: aging, emergency/evacuation procedures, residents’ rights, and first aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may not physically handle the medication, staff may place containers within reach, and residents may self-direct administration of medications. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a nursing assessment and assessment by a trained assessor. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide snacks between meals and before bed, all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, and provide three or more meals a day.
