Assisted living communities offer recreational activities, supervision, and healthcare to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often provide aid with transit and appointments, outings for organized activity, and help with daily activities. In certain situations, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . The state of Michigan maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this type of community. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, and The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include reporting requirements and documentation, residents rights and responsibilities, staff training program based on the home’s program statement, and administration of medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, supervised personal care, guidance, and reminding resident of important activities to be carried out. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications.
