Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and aid for people who may require support with things such as dressing or taking medication. Assisted living communities commonly offer supervision of care, help with the activities of daily life, and help with appointments and transit. In certain cases, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or nursing. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . Michigan has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, and A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: residents rights and responsibilities, supervision, containment of infectious disease, and standard precautions. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, medication supervision and administration, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervised personal care, guidance, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, and assisting a resident to keep appointments.
