Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and assistance for your loved one who may require a helping hand with everyday activities such as dressing or cooking. The services offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . The state of Massachusetts maintains specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs regulates this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, residence must provide or arrange for the availability of food selections that would permit a resident to adhere to a diet consistent with the most recent edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans, communities must provide up to three regularly scheduled meals daily, and communities must use daily recommended dietary allowances as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, assistance with activities of daily living , timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, and management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding residents to take medications, observing residents while they take the medication, and reading the medication label to residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of residents current diagnoses and medical history, assessment of allergies and dietary needs, assessment of the individual’s needs and preferences, and assessment of residents ability to manage medications. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include 7-hour general orientation , elder abuse and neglect, Review of the aging process, and resident bill of rights.
