Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social events as well as individual support. Assisted living communities often offer supervision of care, assistance with the activities of daily life, and chances for leisurely activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regulates this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include the use of service plans, the resident assessment process, residents’ rights, and emergency disaster plans. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be well-balanced, meals must be varied, meals must be properly prepared, and meals must be palatable. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, treatment requirements, ability to self-administer medication, and risk factor management needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications, staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, and assistance with self-administration of medications.
