Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and health care for persons who might require support with things such as showering or mobility. Assisted living communities commonly provide supervision of care, aid with the activities of daily life, and help with appointments and transportation. In certain instances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, nursing, or hospice. In Maine, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $62,031 . The state of Maine maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, other services identified in a service plan, chore services, and housekeeping services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as residents need to be assessed within 30 calendar days of admission and residents need to be reassessed at least every 6 months thereafter. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents must be assessed for their need for assistance, residents must be assessed for their ability to self-administer medications, and treatment administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be planned in accordance with residents’ needs and preferences, at least one nutritious meal a day must be provided, therapeutic diets are considered treatments and must be ordered in writing, by a duly authorized licensed practitioner, and a registered dietician must approve menus annually. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These include: The licensee must attend any training sessions that the Department determines are necessary to meet licensing standards and the administrator must attend any training sessions mandated by the department. Public assistance is available through Medicaid MaineCare State Plan and the MaineCare 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program.
