Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individualized support. Assisted living communities frequently provide assistance with transit and appointments, opportunities for social activity, and aid with the activities of daily life. In some situations, communities may offer hospice, dementia care, or skilled nursing. In Louisiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $43,800 . The state of Louisiana maintains specific rules related to this type of community. The Department of Health and Hospitals, Health Standards Section regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health related services to maximize the resident’s autonomy , activities, assisted living services, and health-related services that encourage family and community involvement. Staff must obtain education in a number of areas. These include: specialized training in the population served, supervisory/management techniques, infection control, and geriatrics. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan must be revised when a resident’s condition or preferences change, assessment of the resident’s needs and preferences, The service plan must include the scope of services that will be provided to meet the resident’s needs, and pre-admission appraisal. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be reviewed and approved by a nutritionist or dietician to ensure nutritional appropriateness, communities must make reasonable accommodations to provide meals in a resident’s room if needed on a temporary basis, communities must provide three meals a day, and communities must make reasonable accommodations to make snacks, fruit, and beverages available when requested. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. menus must be planned or approved by a registered licensed dietician if the resident has a medically prescribed diet There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include the resident may be physically assisted in pouring or otherwise taking medications, Staff may open the medicine container if the resident lacks the ability to open the container, and assistance with self-administration.
