An assisted living facility is a residential community which administers care, assistance, and support to healthy seniors who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living facilities usually offer assistance with appointments and transit, assistance with the activities of daily life, and chances for social activity. Under certain circumstances, facilities may provide hospice, respite, or continuing care. In Louisiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $43,800 . Louisiana maintains specific rules associated with this kind of facility. The Department of Health and Hospitals, Health Standards Section licenses this facility type. Staff members obtain training in a number of areas. These areas include emergency and evacuation procedures, infection control, training in resident care services, and adult first-aid. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration, the dosage may be checked according to the container label, and Staff may open the medicine container if the resident lacks the ability to open the container. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include facilities must make reasonable accommodations to meet dietary requirements and religious and ethnic preferences, menus must be reviewed and approved by a nutritionist or dietician to ensure nutritional appropriateness, facilities must make reasonable accommodations to meet residents' temporary schedule changes and preferences, and facilities must make reasonable accommodations to provide meals in a resident's room if needed on a temporary basis. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. menus must be planned or approved by a registered licensed dietician if the resident has a medically prescribed diet The minimum number of residents for this facility type is 2. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
