Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as personalized help. The types of service provided often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or continuing care. In Louisiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $43,800 . Louisiana has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Health and Hospitals, Health Standards Section certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living services, health-related services that are designed to allow the individual to reside in the least restrictive setting of his/her choice, health related services to maximize the resident’s autonomy , and health-related services that encourage family and community involvement. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must make reasonable accommodations to meet dietary requirements and religious and ethnic preferences, menus must be reviewed and approved by a nutritionist or dietician to ensure nutritional appropriateness, communities must make reasonable accommodations to make snacks, fruit, and beverages available when requested, and communities must make reasonable accommodations to meet residents’ temporary schedule changes and preferences. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan must be revised when a resident’s condition or preferences change, The service plan must include the scope of services that will be provided to meet the resident’s needs, pre-admission appraisal, and assessment of the resident’s needs and preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include the medication regimen may be read to the resident, Staff may open the medicine container if the resident lacks the ability to open the container, and resident may be reminded to take his/her medication. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. menus must be planned or approved by a registered licensed dietician if the resident has a medically prescribed diet This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: assisted living concepts, instruction in the specific responsibilities of each employee’s job, community policies and procedures, and supervisory/management techniques.
