Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers support, care, and supervision to self-sufficient persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently offer aid with the activities of daily life, chances for social activity, and assistance with transit and appointments. In select cases, communities may offer “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, 24-hour care, and assistance with storage of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, promoting independence in activities of daily living, 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, and behavior management. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration.
