An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides assistance, support, and supervision to self-sufficient individuals who do not need skilled nursing services. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, dementia care, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include security, supervision of self-administered medications, laundry, and assistance with activities of daily living. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication reminders, supervision of self-administered medications, and reading the medication label to residents. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of areas. These include: resident rights, confidentiality, neglect prevention, and residents’ need and service plans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
