Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide organized social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized support. Services offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In certain instances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or continuing care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, assisted living care, described as personal services, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. Staff members obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: proper food preparation, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, including the special needs of residents with dementia, and Residents’ rights. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, whether family supports are available, and assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program.
