Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer care, supervision, and social interaction to individuals who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly offer assistance with transportation and appointments, care supervision, and opportunities for organized activity. In some situations, communities may provide hospice, skilled nursing care, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has specific standards associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, assisting residents with storage of medications, and cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These include: emergency preparedness, attendance policies, assistance with medications, and emergency first-aid and CPR. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, personal preferences relative to care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, and assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day.
