New Home for Mom
My mother-in-law, who has Alzheimer's, has been in the Silver & Gray Harbor Retreat Care Home for over a year now, and we couldn't be happier with her care. Despite a very difficult and long adjustment period, her caregivers remained patient with her, and supportive of us and the entire family. I had researched care options for several months, knowing that placing her was inevitable once caring for her at home became too difficult for us and unsafe for her. The support of Ed Gay of "A Place for Mom," as well as the Silver and Gray Home Care main office staff (especially Glenda), helped us make this emotional decision in a practical and informed way. We toured several facilities, but the feeling we experienced when we walked into Harbor Retreat was significantly different from the others. The atmosphere was friendly, calm, and positive, with great rapport between the residents and caregivers. After the tour, the staff invited us to sit down with them and the ladies, and share a relaxing break together. While we continued to research and look at other facilities, Harbor Retreat remained at the top of our list, and we were thankful a place came open when it was time. Harbor Retreat may not be the newest or fanciest of facilities, but the personal care given to our mother, and the strong feeling of “being home,” is the best!

I really like them, I'm really happy with them.
I really like them, I'm really happy with them. They have been great, and Grace has been very gracious. She let me know that they had experience with residents that had similar reservations, and they were able to reassure me and address my concerns.

Silver Lining
This was not an easy move for my mom, or us for that matter, as she is very aware of all her surroundings. We needed to make a move for financial purposes and that she could be closer to me. She needs full care for her Alzheimer's and also in need of a walker. She's had quite a few falls. Silver and Gray are very nice people to work with and I feel comfortable asking them anything. They were helpful in the transition process and letting us know what to expect. My mom is still in a stage where she likes friendly conversation, but doesn't care to much about extra activities, so what we find hard right now is she is not really able to carry on conversations with the other patients (who might have further disabilities) but seem very sweet. All in all we need to give it more time, but the process with Silver and Gray was easy and they are very accommodating. Love this home. I walked in and it seems to be spotless, nice color painted walls (not dingy white) simple wood laminate floor throughout. Bathroom always seems to be clean. No clutter. Consistency. :-D

Not Maintained
It looked like the house wasn't well cared for. The roof had stuff from the treas all over it, and the gutters hadn't been fixed. It seemed like they hadn't done basic maintenance on the house.

Communication is difficult
When we were there the manager was pretty nice. She showed the entire area and it looked pretty clean. There were not too many patients and it's close to where I am living now. I didn't see any activites. They just make them sit in the TV area. The communication is difficult with the caregiver. I think there is a language problem. I can't be sure whether they are good for my husband becuase he doesn't say anything. I can't really comment on the care services or the friendliness because I don't really know the people that take care of him.

I called this place and was referred ...
I called this place and was referred to a group home in Torrance also run by them. The home was very clean and the lady who showed me around was very kind. There were only two residents at the time so it was lowkey.
