Make sure you are present and talk to all who care for your loved one. \n\nThe reason we picked Esplanade is that the memory care unit was small and there was less chance for confusion of were his room would be and how he could get back to his room. [name remove] was very knowledgeable about the facility and residents there. She answered all of our questions and explained how the process works. The facility is a bit older but they were remodeling many areas. There was no smell or odor as we walked through the facility. It was clean and kept tidy. They did have planned activities and events for all residents. My dad is always dressed, shirt tucked in with a belt, shoes on, hair comb he always looks presentable no matter when we pop in and we pop in often. The food is ok, good quality and variety. Housekeeping/laundry is weekly and they do a good job. Communication with the family is good, they're good about letting me know what mom needs and keeping me updated. Staff is pretty good, not too many complaints. The first month was rough, but once they brought an additional staff member in for the memory care unit it got much better. Before that, since mom was more efficient than some of the other residents, it seemed like she got less care/attention. But they really turned things around by adding another staff member. All places we looked at were on about an 8/1 ratio for residents to staff, but the extra person here in the memory care unit made a big difference.
