Nursing Homes

A nursing home community provides room and board to at least two persons who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. This type of complex offers its residents 24-hour care by registered nurses. These caregivers provide personal care, maintenance and other health related services for people who cannot care for their needs.

This type of community is a convenient and easy care alternative for individuals 65 years or older, however nursing homes will frequently individuals 55 and older which is for other senior care types. Nursing homes are required to provide specialized rehabilitative services (treatment for mental illness or intellectual disability), nursing and related services, a professionallly directed program of activities, and routine personal hygiene items to residents. Types of care services and amenities offered at nursing homes can include care coordination and case management, home care (like cooking, cleaning, or help with other daily activities), intravenous or nutrition therapy, and monitoring of medication. The most common mental issue experienced by residents of nursing homes is dementia, which can hinder their decision making capacities, and familiarity with their surroundings, and memory recall. A large number of residents tend to be bachelors or widows who have smaller social support groups, and almost 50% of nursing home residents are over the age of 85. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include specially prepared food, cosmetic and grooming items, and personal comfort items.
