Independent living communities — also known simply as retirement communities — in The Woodlands are geared towards seniors who are able to live on their own, without daily assistance, and prefer to live among people their age. This usually means residents are self-sufficient and do not require hands-on care. Think of The Woodlands retirement communities as age-restricted (typically 55+) complexes, which provide organized activities, meal services, and transportation.

Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Designed in 1974, the community’s founder described the vision of The Woodlands to be a “…thoughtful and diverse living experience that balanced the spirit of neighborhood life with business and innovation…”

Not only is The Woodlands surrounded by the natural beauty of the forest and home to a unique bird population, but it’s also composed of nine residential villages, 148 parks, and 220 miles of walking trails. Located on a branch of Lake Woodlands is the Woodlands Waterway, a waterfront park with public art and walking trails, along with Waterway Square, a popular retail area with cafes and shops. The Woodlands Waterway leads to Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, a music venue that serves as the summer host of the Houston Symphony and the second home of the Houston Ballet.

The Woodlands prides itself on being one of many arts hubs in the Houston area. The community features over 50 outdoor sculptures, as well as an ever-growing collection of art benches — pieces of usable public art scattered throughout the public parks. Every April, The Woodlands hosts the Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, featuring more than 200 artists as well as upscale culinary experiences and live performances.

Transportation

The community offers the Woodlands Express Park and Ride, which includes a paratransit service option for seniors and a free trolley in The Woodlands Town Center.
