Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers assistance, care, and support to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. The types of service offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select cases, communities may provide skilled nursing, hospice, or continuing care. The state of Wisconsin maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity programming for persons with dementia, independent living skills, including personal care, and health monitoring. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans. Staff members obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include standard precautions, needs assessment of prospective residents, provision of personal care, and first-aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable.
